Front view of a Cisco 6500. This switch is very flexible as it has a modular chassis. The top two cards are "supervisors" and are essentially the processor for the switch. The lower cards are 48 port Gigabit Ethernet cards where all of the building ethernet drops are connected. The second-from the bottom card has GBIC interfaces for connecting fiber. The fiber is used to uplink two switches together. Fiber is preferred because it can span much larger distances and has a lot of bandwidth.
